Lawrence Revere: A Blackjack Controversy
Naming Lawrence Revere a Blackjack controversy may not be something overrated at all, since over his career of being a professional Blackjack player — and a professional Blackjack dealer, if you are wondering how the controversy started — he is surrounded by a lot of ambiguous issues and controversies.
Revere wasn’t a bad Blackjack player at all. He began his professional gambling career in 1943, and managed to be one of the best professional players in history. What makes him and his 28 years of spectacular gambling career is that he spent his time as a pit boss, a dealer, an owner, and troubleshooter as well as a professional Blackjack player.
Many argued about his double-agent status. Some people thought being a dealer may have positive impacts on Revere’s Blackjack playing skills. Other considered Revere’s act of working for both sides as unethical and highly inappropriate.
Revere’s largest and most notable accomplishment is of course his infamous book: Playing Blackjack as a Business. The book is noted as one of the best books about Blackjack, allowing new players to study different aspects of the game and experienced players to see the game as a profitable business. Blackjack is a very profitable as well as beatable game indeed, and Revere successfully pointed out some of the skills and methods players can use to be much more successful at Blackjack tables.
Controversies aside, Revere is still acknowledged as one of the best professional Blackjack players the world has ever seen. The Blackjack legend died of cancer on April 23rd, 1977.
